SPECIFIC THEMES: This level is designed for everyone. Its purpose is to explore different themes in greater depth and to provide more extensive knowledge of the issues raised in emerging research activities. Level 3 seeks to stimulate critical reflection through application of the ethical principles pertaining to scientific research, interpretation and application of normative texts, and use of the tools presented in the preceding levels. Level 3 therefore complements the basic training of levels 1 and 2 by enabling users to enhance and update their knowledge on specific themes, as well as to improve the skills they need to make ethical decisions.
  • Module 3.1 discusses ethical analysis of benefits and harms a theme that is central to ethical review by REBs. The notions of benefits, harms and risk will be analyzed in greater depth and integrated in a systematic approach to benefit-harm analysis that distinguishes between therapeutic and non-therapeutic procedures of a research project.

  • Module 3.2 reviews issues that are relevant to research involving children, incompetent adults and other persons in situations of vulnerability. The specific requirements that apply to research involving children and incompetent adults are examined in detail. In addition, the module examines the circumstances that may lead to considering persons "capable of consent" as being in situations of vulnerability.

  • This module focuses on specific issues raised by clinical trials. It builds on previous modules and applies the ethics principles in the context of clinical trials where particular issues arise. Thus, some ethics principles discussed in other modules will not be discussed here since they do not raise particular issues in the context of clinical trials. They nonetheless need to be reviewed by REBs. Even though this module provides a more detailed analysis in the context of clinical trials specifically, some content may also be relevant to other areas of health and social research.
