FAQ

Who should take the MSSS online tutorial?
While this training program is intended primarily for members and support staff of the research ethics boards (REBs) within the Quebec health and social services network, it is accessible to everyone. Thus, REB members not affiliated with the Quebec public network may also update their knowledge by completing the tutorial's different modules.

What is the difference between this program and the web-based tutorial developed by Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics (PRE)?
While complementary, the MSSS and PRE web-based training programs have different objectives. The PRE's tutorial (CORE) is an introductory program on basic principles of ethics and on a single normative text: the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2) 2010. For its part, the MSSS's online tutorial deals with all texts pertinent to research conducted in the Quebec health and social services network, including the TCPS2. You are encouraged to familiarize yourself also with the PRE web-based tutorial

What is the scope of the online tutorial?
The online tutorial consists of three levels. General in nature, module 1 constitutes the first level, namely, basic training intended for all members of REBs and their support staffs. The second level is specific in nature and divided into two modules: module 2.1 targets the needs of REB support staffs, while module 2.2 is primarily for members of REBs. The third level, which includes modules 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3, examines in greater depth certain issues relating to research ethics. Each module throughout the tutorial contains between 10 and 20 questions, scenarios or mock protocols on the various themes concerning research ethics and the REB's role.

How much time is needed to complete the online tutorial?
The time needed to complete the online tutorial will depend largely on the individual user and his/her particular interests. Tutorial users are free to do whatever modules they like. We estimate that it takes between 40 and 90 minutes to read and answer the questions in each module. Due to busy schedules, REB members and support staff rarely can devote 30 consecutive minutes to web-based training. It is therefore possible for users to exit the program at any time and return later to continue their training where they left off.

Can the modules be printed?
Tutorial users can print the text portion of each module. However, the questions and answers are available online only. To complete the modules, users must read the questions and answer them online.

What computer equipment does the online tutorial require?
The online tutorial does not require you to download any programs. You can access the program using any computer connected to the Internet and equipped with an up-to-date web browser.

What do I have to do to start my online training?
Simply sign in by completing the online log-in form. When you have done so, and selected and confirmed a user name and password, you can start your training.

What can I do with the content of the tutorial?
You can print the text of the modules and use them for your own training, or that of others (e.g., other members of your REB).
